Abstract

n their development, children need proper care according to their needs in order to develop optimally. A child who
is able to live his life independently without any help from his parents or primary caregivers is referred to as a child
who has entered the emerging adult stage. Emerging adulthood is the period that lasts when children enter the age of
18 to 25 years. Parenting affects the formation of the child's personality. Children in emerging adulthood are focused
on themselves and have great autonomy in living their lives, so it is important for parents to provide opportunities for
children to learn independently. Parental involvement that is not in accordance with the child's developmental stage
is called overparenting. This research examines the effect of parenting on personality. Participants were 184 men and
women (mean age 21.25 years). Data collection using Helicopter Parenting Instrument (HPI) and NEO-Five Factor
Inventory (NEO-FFI). The results show that only paternal overparenting can predict the neuroticism trait in young
adults (t-value = 1.97 > 1.96, with p < 0.05). The higher the father's overparenting, the higher the possibility of the
child having the neuroticism trait as a young adult. These results are in line with the research of Odenweller, Booth-
Butterfield and Weber (2014) and Montgomery (in Bradley-Geist & Olson-Buchanan, 2014), there is a relationship
between overparenting and the neurotic trait. Meanwhile, father and mother overparenting did not play a significant
role in the formation of traits Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness.
