Abstract

Social media users are increasing, along with the growth of internet users and mobile communication
devices. The younger generation prefers social media to find information and entertainment. As a
result, old media like television began to be abandoned by the audience. Another impact is advertisers
on television tend to decrease. In the theory of media convergence (Pavlik, 2001), to survive the old
media must adopt new media technology, so that the content can appear on diverse or multi-platform
media. Television must use social media to maintain loyal audiences and reach social media users to
watch television news. The MNC group which has four free to air televisions, iNews, RCTI, MNC,
Global TV, began to build social media. This research aims to describes the activities of MNC's social
media team in utilizing social media. This study uses a qualitative perspective with a case study
method. Data collection is done by in-depth interviews, observation and documentation. The
conclusion of this study is MNC group uses social media to promote its news programs. Social media
become as program extensions for television. The MNC social media team works as a content
uploader for news programs that have aired on television, and also creates their own social media
content. News curation is carried out by social media teams.
