Abstract

"The purpose of this research is to find out the adaptation capability of a widow
when she takes the role as a single parent. The main theory being used in this
research is mature personality theory by Rogers. This research was held from July
3oth 1999 until October 29th 1999 and used in-depth-interview method as the basic
approach. The respondents were four widows, two of them were working mothers,
others were housewives, and all of them had teenager kids in the age between 14
to 17 years old. The respondents were chosen to see the differences of
complication degree between two types of respondents on their adaptation
capability in their role as single parent.
At their husband’s death, widow will feel rapid change of situations. The lost
of the head of family caused the crucial problem for them, which is the lost of the
breadwinner. Widows also have to be a single parth for raising their children. For
working widows, they have allocate the time for their jobs and their children, so
the children will not feel neglected. Housewives widows will have a lot of time for taking care their children, but financially, they will have to face the problem to
fulfill their family’s needs. These factors will lead them to deal with psychological
problems.
In conclusion, the research shows us that a widow’s capability of adaptation
depends on her mature personality. Based on Roger’s theory, none of the
respondents has enough mature personality. The next finding is that the primary
factor of good relationship between mothers and their teenagers’ children is
communication. With good communication, mothers and their children could
share their point of view for solving any problems that occurred between them.
This condition shows us, that understanding between each other is the best thing
for solving the conflict between them. Mother also could share her love and
acceptance, and it will make the children feel secure and safe.
Finally, the researcher would like to make suggestions for widows in order to
have their confidence that the fiJture is in their hands. They also have to be firm
attitute besides loving, caring and being tender in order to raise their children.
Discussion and suggestion are included considering to provide spiritual support
for working widows.
